Comunicas.- The pro-tempore presidency of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) presided over by Ecuador has suggested May 4, 2010, as the next date for a meeting between member countries to support, if they reach a consensus, the candidature of the Argentinean ex President Nestor Kirchner for the position of Secretary General of Unasur.
The information was given by the foreign minister of Ecuador Ricardo Patiño, who explained that it will not be possible to hold the meeting on April 21 or 23, as it was previously expected, due to commitments of South American presidents.
“We thought to take advantage of the Environmental Summit in Bolivia, and make it there, but it was going to be difficult to organize the two of them,” the foreign minister said.
Patiño assured that to date no country has expressed any difficulty on attending Buenos Aires, Argentina, next May 4 for the Unasur meeting.
Likewise, the Ecuadorian minister informed that he has been talking to diverse member countries presidents and foreign ministers about the candidature of Nestor Kirchner for the position of Secretary General of Unasur.
“We consider (the support to Kirchner) has a good chance to become effective, that we reach a consensus between the presidents, but we could not assure it yet,” Patiño stated.
