Comunicas.- Israel signed an agreement with the United States for the purchase of 20 fighter planes valued at US$2.75 billion, local newspapers reported.
According to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, the accord was signed by the general director of the Israeli Defense Ministry, Ehud Shani, and U.S. suppliers in New York on Thursday, and the delivery of the F-35 fighters will be made from 2015 to 2017.
The source added that the U.S. party offered the option of selling another 75 fighters in the future.
On the other hand, Shani described the transaction as a historical event and a new era for the Israeli military power.
Pacifists groups slammed the deal and questioned the image of the United States as amediator in the Middle East peace process, without hiding that it is Israel's main political and military ally.
